New Year Declaration!

Wow, 2017 literally flew by! I can't believe we are almost 2 weeks into 2018!  I am thankful to still be here and hope to be a blessing to others.

In the past, I like many others had several New Year resolutions but would not be able to carry out as expected. For the past few years I decided to recite a New Year declaration. It is very positive and uplifts me in every aspect of my life.

My declaration for 2018 is Maintain Positivity In All Situations! That declaration was influenced by the Pastor at my church. It will be challenging to maintain such a declaration at all times no matter what is happening around me. I will try my best to honor it every day. Reality kicks in at times and one may not always feel like acting on a declaration or resolution. Honestly, life happens and you may feel and speak negative thoughts. I personally make a great effort to negate negative thoughts and replace them with positive ones. I must say not an easy feat, but something I am working on. I also catch myself when I am about to say something negative. I am determined to keep my New Year declaration on the tip of my tongue! There is always something to be grateful for. Also, I believe my Heavenly Father has great things in store for me.

I hope you are already in progress with plans for positive changes in your life.

Have a Blessed and Prosperous New Year!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Happy Fall!  As most are aware, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and I thought it would be appropriate to spread knowledge on breast cancer awareness. Everyone should be attentive to this matter being that age nor sex releases anyone from breast cancer.

According to the Mayo Clinic the below facts and symptoms exist for breast cancer:

Fast Facts About Breast Cancer

  • Each year in the United States, more than 200,000 women get breast cancer and more than 40,000 women die from the disease.
  • Men also get breast cancer, but it is not very common. Less than 1% of breast cancers occur in men.
  • Most breast cancers are found in women who are 50 years old or older, but breast cancer also affects younger women. About 11% of all new cases of breast cancer in the United States are found in women younger than 45 years of age
Signs And Symptoms Of Breast Cancer

  • A breast lump or thickening that feels different from the surrounding tissue
  • Bloody discharge from the nipple
  • Change in the size, shape or appearance of a breast
  • Changes to the skin over the breast, such as dimpling
  • A newly inverted nipple
  • Peeling, scaling or flaking of the pigmented area of skin surrounding the nipple (areola) or breast skin
  • Redness or pitting of the skin over your breast, like the skin of an orange

When To See A Doctor

If you find a lump or other change in your breast — even if a recent mammogram was normal — make an appointment with your doctor for prompt evaluation.
Please note that any of the above symptoms may occur whether you are a man or woman. Please do not hesitate to contact your doctor for any questions and/or concerns.
Also feel free to contact me with any questions and/or concerns. I will be an advocate and lead you in the right direction. Call 267-225-7505.

Wishing you well in all that you do!

August is National Immunization Month

I can't believe the summer is almost over! Only a few weeks left till the end of August and then comes the fall season! Well, I hope you have enjoyed your summer thus far but with the fall season comes the flu season.

It is very important to take the time to educate yourself and speak to your family doctor/nurse regarding the importance/necessity of vaccinations and if you are indeed a candidate for a vaccination. For the past few years I have taken pleasure in administering the flu vaccination to various corporations.

I myself used to have a phobia about the flu vaccination in particular being that I experienced weird symptoms after taking one over 20 years ago. Of course along with some staff nurses still getting sick (from who knows what) after taking the vaccine, so did I. I figured well I got sick taking and not taking it so why even bother. Upon a nursing assignment at a hospital, I was told I had to either take the flu vaccination, obtain a doctor's note or just not work there anymore.  I decided to take it after 20 years and I felt absolutely fine and did not get the flu. I have been taking it annually now for a few years and no regrets.

According to the CDC, flu season begins as early as August and can last until as late as May. It is suggested to be vaccinated by the end of October but it is not too late if you wait a few months later. Also per the CDC, when you take the flu vaccination, it will not give you the  flu. It is however possible that you can contract another flu virus not covered in the vaccine or you get the vaccine but the 2 week time frame does not cover the existing flu virus in your body.

Prevention is everything! You and your family should take measures to stay safe and healthy. Remember handwashing is the most important method of preventing germs! Also prevent spread of germs by coughing/sneezing into your elbow sleeve vs using your hands or not covering at all.

Again, contact your family doctor for any questions or concerns. Also Angel Nurseworks is available to answer any questions or will direct you to the right resource.

Enjoy the rest of  the summer season!

Wishing you the best in all you do!

Aging Sexuality

Wow, people over 70 still have sex? I am sure many folks say that when thinking about our "Golden Population" engaging in sexual activity.

I am glad to say it is so!  Folks over 70 are still enjoying themselves in the bedroom and with the average life expectancy being 78.7 years old--76 years for a man and 81 years for a woman, we should be glad!

According to a recent article on www.verywell.com Dr.Mark Stibich provided very interesting statistics from reputable sources regarding the prevalence of sexual activity for elders. For example, 46% of men and 33% of women over 70 masturbate and 43% of men and 22% of women over 70 engage in sexual intercourse. Interestingly enough the other statistics provided mentioned that women over 70 reported being more physically satisfied than when they were in their 40's. Also both sexes reported feeling more emotionally satisfied.

Very promising statistics for those who want to age gracefully!

Of course keep in mind that there are precautions to heed to in our golden years due to the simple aging process/body changes, medications, diet, surgical procedures, mental status, physical status, family situation, mobility etc.. I would also recommend that you discuss everything with your family doctor. A great time to discuss sexuality is during your scheduled physicals.

Also, continue to practice safe sex! It is very important to screen partner/s just like you would in your younger years if not in a committed relationship.

Well, I look forward to healthy aging and life does not have to stop just because you are of a certain age.

If you have any questions/concerns, feel free to contact www.angelnurseworks.com or your trusted health care professional.

Triumphantly Overcoming Financial Stress

How many times have you ever felt stressed in life?  Unfortunately probably more times than you wish to expand on. Now how many times has the stress been attributed to your finances/money?  With finances/money issues being the primary reason for divorces and commonly associated with other relationships falling out..it is high on the list!

According to the American Psychology Association (APA) stress can affect people of all ages, genders and circumstances and can lead to both physical and psychological health issues. The APA defines stress as any uncomfortable emotional experience accompanied by predictable biochemical, physiological and behavioral changes. Some signs/symptoms of stress are depression, anxiety, viral disease and difficulty breathing. Also some people experience serious disorders such as heart disease.

Forbes has an article that mentions a few reasons that contribute to financial worry:

  • Job/income uncertainty
  • Differences in financial philosophy with a significant other/family
  • Anxiety about the future
  • Debt
  • Unplanned expenses
  • Emotional spending

Oprah.com listed a few ways to overcome financial stress that include the following:

  • Plan for a daily budget and rewarding yourself (low cost)once hit target goals
  • Exchange massages with your partner/friend to relieve stress and release endorphins or feel good hormones
  • A low cost hobby such as needlework/knitting which actually elicits a relaxation response and reduces chance of dementia for people over 65
  • Hypnosis has been shown to redirect people's mind frame regarding poor money habits. It also helps them understand that net worth does not equal personal worth
  • Suggest that seeing the big picture in the situation helps people realize it is not always their fault...ex) layoff, job economy, unable to get a job. Key is moving forward.

Also keep in mind there are numerous resources available to help you get on track with your finances and hence lower your overall stress levels. Your church may have a financial ministry that would be willing to volunteer their services to members. SCORE.org has a wealth of services for entrepreneurs, most with no charge. Also obtaining a good financial coach within your budget may be an alternative solution. There are free financial empowerment centers available to assist.  On a spiritual level, seek out your higher being/power to assist you in lowering your stress levels and increase your self worth. If absolutely necessary, seek a responsible and trustworthy person in your life to guide/assist you in any way possible. Once you achieve your financial goals and are in a better place, thank him/her in a wonderful way!

In addition to the above suggestions, remember to get regular physicals, exercise, eat healthy foods and get plenty of sleep. You need to be of sound mind, body and spirit in order to make good decisions in life. Remember to practice gratitude on a daily basis. There is always something to be grateful for!

Wishing you well in all that you do!

Self-Love

Recently, I have made it a personal priority to show myself some love! I mean actually taking time at least once a week to show myself appreciation. I often struggle with self image/confidence but always knew in my heart that GOD loves me just the way I am and others do too!  It is important for me to realize my own value and worth. I am taking proactive steps to accept myself the way that I am and move forward in my life.

What is self-love? According to Merriam's dictionary, self -love is regard for one's own well-being and happiness. This is particularly important because I have a holistic approach when caring for my clients and that involves every aspect of one's life.  How can I be teaching and helping others in that capacity and not help myself! Self-love is crucial in order to have stability and peace in every aspect of your life.

How can one show self-love?  According to an article in Psychology Today, Dr. Khoshaba provides a Prescription for Seven Step Self-Love. The steps are listed below:

1.Become mindful: Become aware of your own feelings, wants, thoughts. Act on this knowledge rather than what others want for you

2.Act on needs vs wants: You love yourself more when you can turn away from something that feels good and exciting to what you need to stay strong, centered, and moving forward in your life.

3.Practice good self-care: People high in self-love nourish themselves daily thru healthy activities, like exercise, sound nutrition, proper sleep, intimacy, and healthy social interactions.

4.Set boundaries: You'll love yourself more when you set limits or say no to work, relationships, or activities that deplete or harm your overall well-being

5.Protect yourself: Bring and maintain the right people in your life. Folks who are positive and uplifting.

6.Forgive yourself: We have to learn not to be so hard on ourselves and realize we are only human and will make mistakes. Remember, there are no failures if you have learned and grown from your mistakes: there are only lessons learned.

7.Live intentionally: You will accept and love yourself more despite what is happening in your life when you live with purpose and design. Establish your living intentions and prepare goals in order to achieve them. You will feel good about yourself once you succeed in this purpose.

I hope you have the tools to love yourself and nurture your mind, body and spirit.

God bless you on your journey into greatness!

February Is Go Red For Women

I am sure you are quite familiar with the "Go Red" awareness for women in February. You also probably have seen many commercials and photos on social media showing women with gorgeous red dresses.

The AHA (American Heart Association) initiated the movement in 2004 because they faced a major challenge. AHA reported that cardiovascular disease claimed the lives of 500,000 women and yet some women were not paying any attention thinking it is a man's disease. In order to raise awareness that heart disease and stroke are the number one killer of women, the AHA created the Go Red for Women which was designed to empower women to take charge of their heart health.

Per the AHA, the goal of Go Red for Women is to raise more awareness and ultimately to save more lives. It empowers women to band together and wipe out heart disease. It challenges women to know their risk for heart disease and take action to reduce their personal risk. It also provides the tools to we need to lead a heart healthy life. Knowing your numbers is a very important aspect of your health.
  • Get your annual physicals and lab work done
  • Make sure you get your cholesterol levels, blood glucose levels and blood pressure checked at least annually
  • Aim for a normal BMI (body mass index)
  • Also discuss an exercise plan with your doctor
  • If on medications--take daily as ordered
  • Make sure you engage in a healthier diet
  • Most importantly share the knowledge

I hope you feel encouraged and empowered to be your best self Now do your part towards living a long, healthy life!
