August is National Immunization Month

I can't believe the summer is almost over! Only a few weeks left till the end of August and then comes the fall season! Well, I hope you have enjoyed your summer thus far but with the fall season comes the flu season.

It is very important to take the time to educate yourself and speak to your family doctor/nurse regarding the importance/necessity of vaccinations and if you are indeed a candidate for a vaccination. For the past few years I have taken pleasure in administering the flu vaccination to various corporations.

I myself used to have a phobia about the flu vaccination in particular being that I experienced weird symptoms after taking one over 20 years ago. Of course along with some staff nurses still getting sick (from who knows what) after taking the vaccine, so did I. I figured well I got sick taking and not taking it so why even bother. Upon a nursing assignment at a hospital, I was told I had to either take the flu vaccination, obtain a doctor's note or just not work there anymore.  I decided to take it after 20 years and I felt absolutely fine and did not get the flu. I have been taking it annually now for a few years and no regrets.

According to the CDC, flu season begins as early as August and can last until as late as May. It is suggested to be vaccinated by the end of October but it is not too late if you wait a few months later. Also per the CDC, when you take the flu vaccination, it will not give you the  flu. It is however possible that you can contract another flu virus not covered in the vaccine or you get the vaccine but the 2 week time frame does not cover the existing flu virus in your body.

Prevention is everything! You and your family should take measures to stay safe and healthy. Remember handwashing is the most important method of preventing germs! Also prevent spread of germs by coughing/sneezing into your elbow sleeve vs using your hands or not covering at all.

Again, contact your family doctor for any questions or concerns. Also Angel Nurseworks is available to answer any questions or will direct you to the right resource.

Enjoy the rest of  the summer season!

Wishing you the best in all you do!
