February Is Go Red For Women

I am sure you are quite familiar with the "Go Red" awareness for women in February. You also probably have seen many commercials and photos on social media showing women with gorgeous red dresses.

The AHA (American Heart Association) initiated the movement in 2004 because they faced a major challenge. AHA reported that cardiovascular disease claimed the lives of 500,000 women and yet some women were not paying any attention thinking it is a man's disease. In order to raise awareness that heart disease and stroke are the number one killer of women, the AHA created the Go Red for Women which was designed to empower women to take charge of their heart health.

Per the AHA, the goal of Go Red for Women is to raise more awareness and ultimately to save more lives. It empowers women to band together and wipe out heart disease. It challenges women to know their risk for heart disease and take action to reduce their personal risk. It also provides the tools to we need to lead a heart healthy life. Knowing your numbers is a very important aspect of your health.
  • Get your annual physicals and lab work done
  • Make sure you get your cholesterol levels, blood glucose levels and blood pressure checked at least annually
  • Aim for a normal BMI (body mass index)
  • Also discuss an exercise plan with your doctor
  • If on medications--take daily as ordered
  • Make sure you engage in a healthier diet
  • Most importantly share the knowledge

I hope you feel encouraged and empowered to be your best self Now do your part towards living a long, healthy life!
