Generally private duty services can be provided by a registered nurse (RN), licensed practical nurse (LPN), certified nurse assistant (CNA), or a certified home health aide (HHA). Now you have to decide which health care discipline to hire in order to ensure high quality care for your loved one.
Below is a list of the duties and responsibilities of nursing oriented home health care disciplines:
RN:
- Graduated from an accredited school with a minimum of a 2 year diploma program, 3 year associate's degree or 4 year bachelor's degree
- CPR/AED/First Aid Certified
- Maintains state regulated CEU's
- Perform physical exams and health histories
- Provide health promotion, counseling and education
- Administer medications, skilled care such as wound care, vitals signs, and numerous other personalized interventions
- Interpret patient information and make critical decisions about needed actions
- Coordinate care, in collaboration with a wide array of health care professionals
- Direct and supervise care delivered by other healthcare personnel like LPN's and CNA's
- Conduct research in support of improved practice and patient outcomes
- Practice in all healthcare settings: hospitals, nursing homes, medical offices, ambulatory care centers, community health centers, schools, and retail clinics. Can also provide health care in more surprising locations such as camps, homeless shelters, prisons, sporting events and tourist destinations
- Provide assistance with all activity of daily living/personal care such as assistance with personal hygiene, dressing, toileting, exercise, moving, positioning, and feeding
- Provide homemaking such as assistance with household tasks housekeeping, shopping, meal planning/preparation, and transportation
- Provide companionship
- Provide respite care such as assistance and support to the family
- Offer a host of other non-medical services
LPN:
- Graduated from an accredited 1 year program/school for licensed practical nursing
- CPR/AED/First Aid Certified
- Maintains state regulated CEU's
- Provides basic and routine care consistent with their education and state regulation under the direction of a RN, Advanced Practice RN, and/or a Physician in a variety of settings
- Provide assistance with all activity of daily living/personal care such as assistance with personal hygiene, toileting, exercise, dressing, feeding, assistance with walking, moving, positioning
- Provide homemaking such as assistance with household tasks housekeeping, shopping, meal planning/preparation, and transportation
- Provide companionship
- Provide respite care such as assistance and support to the family
- Offer a host of other non-medical services
CNA:
- Completed an approved 4 week Certified Nursing Assistant Training program and have a high school diploma/GED
- Maintains state regulated CEU's
- CPR/AED/First Aid certified
- Provide nursing skills such as vital signs--temperature, pulse rate, respiration rate, blood pressure
- Provides basic and routine care consistent under the direction of a RN, Advanced Practice RN, and/or a Physician in a variety of settings
- Provide assistance with all activity of daily living/personal care such as assistance with personal hygiene, toileting, exercise, dressing, feeding, assistance with walking, moving, positioning
- Provide homemaking such as assistance with household tasks housekeeping, shopping, meal planning/preparation, and transportation
- Provide companionship
- Provide respite care such as assistance and support to the family
- Offer a host of other non-medical services
HHA:
- Complete an approved state program for HHA training, usually 6 week training program and have a high school diploma/GED
- Maintains state regulated CEU's
- CPR/AED/First Aid Certified
- Provides basic and routine care consistent under the direction of a RN, Advanced Practice RN, and/or a Physician in a variety of settings
- Provide assistance with all activity of daily living/personal care such as assistance with personal hygiene, toileting, exercise, dressing, feeding, assistance with walking, moving, positioning
- Provide homemaking such as assistance with household tasks housekeeping, shopping, meal planning/preparation, and transportation
- Provide companionship
- Provide respite care such as assistance and support to the family
- Offer a host of other non-medical services
