June is National Safety Awareness Month

Prince was a multi-talented musical genius that has proved to be one of our greatest legends of all time. Unfortunately, he suffered an untimely death on April 21, 2016 and is reportedly due to opioid drug overdose. The National Institute on  Drug Abuse, define opioids as medications that relieve pain.  They reduce the intensity of pain signals reaching the brain and affect those brain areas controlling emotion, which diminishes the effects of a painful stimulus.  A few examples of opioids are oxycodone and morphine.

The National Safety Council reports that injuries are the leading cause of disability for people of all ages and the leading cause of death for Americans ages 1- 44.  Knowledge is power and information is available to help prevent these type of injuries.

During National Safety Awareness Month,  Angel Nurseworks is shedding light on important safety issues like prescription painkiller abuse,  transportation safety, and slips, trips, and falls. Please do due diligence in informing yourself as well loved ones on these issues.

The National Safety Council reports the below facts:

  •  Prescription painkiller abuse: Prescription painkiller overdoses      are a growing problem in the United States, especially among      women. About 18 women die every day from a prescription          painkiller overdose — more than 4 times as many as back in        1999.

    • Transportation safety: Doing other activities while driving — like texting or eating — distracts you and increases your chance of crashing. Almost 1 in 5 crashes (17%) that injured someone involved distracted driving.
    • Slips, trips, and falls: One in 3 older adults falls each year. Many falls lead to broken bones and other health problems.

Simple facts like those listed above can save many lives. If you notice someone has a problem with painkillers and is not him/herself, stage an intervention.  When you are driving, pull over to text or take a phone call.  Make sure your elderly loved ones homes are clutter free and have important devices/tools readily available. Make sure they taking the right medication along with dosages and check expiration dates etc..

Angel Nurseworks is available to answer any questions or will direct you to the right resource.

Wishing you the best in all that you do!
